North Texas summers are longer and hotter than they were a generation ago, and a home designed for an older version of the season struggles through the current one. Designing for the heat we actually have, rather than the heat we remember, changes decisions across both the interior and the landscape.


What the data actually shows


The National Weather Service's climate record for Dallas-Fort Worth confirms what anyone living here already feels: a humid subtropical climate with a wide temperature range and a summer season defined by sustained, extreme heat, not occasional spikes. Streaks of 100-degree days that once felt exceptional have become a normal part of a North Texas July and August. A design plan built around an older assumption about summer, shorter, milder, more forgiving, sets a home up to fight its own climate for months at a time.


Inside the home, clarity means planning

around heat gain


Heat gain is a design problem before it is a mechanical one. Window orientation, glazing, shading, and material choice determine how much of that outside heat actually reaches your living spaces before an air conditioning system has to compensate for it. We think through solar exposure room by room during a renovation, specifying window treatments, overhangs, and finishes that reduce heat load rather than simply asking the HVAC system to work harder. Our renovation process starts with this kind of climate-specific thinking, not with a finish palette.


Outside the home, the landscape has to work with the season, not against it


A landscape planted for a milder summer will struggle through a North Texas one. That means favoring drought-tolerant, heat-adapted species over ones that need constant irrigation to survive July and August, positioning shade trees to protect both the home and outdoor living spaces from afternoon sun, and designing hardscape materials that do not become unusable underfoot at their hottest. Shade as a design element, not an afterthought


Shade structures, covered outdoor living areas, and strategic tree placement do more for a North Texas property's comfort than almost any other single design decision. We treat shade as a structural element of the plan from the earliest concept, not something added after the fact once a backyard proves unusable in July. A covered outdoor space designed with the actual angle of summer sun in mind stays usable through the months when an unshaded patio simply does not.


Materials that hold up to sustained heat, not just occasional heat


Material selection for both interior and exterior surfaces has to account for sustained exposure, not an occasional hot week. Countertop and flooring materials that can warp or discolor under prolonged heat and direct sun, outdoor furniture frames that degrade faster than their warranty suggests in full Texas sun, and hardscape surfaces that become too hot to walk on barefoot: all of these are avoidable with the right specification up front. We factor sustained summer exposure into every material decision for a North Texas property, indoors and out, rather than choosing based on how a material performs in a showroom.
